I’ve definitely been postponing Fall as long as I could this year. Maybe it had to do with being 9 months pregnant when it was still 90 degrees out that made me want to hang on to summery peach salads and popsicles for a little while longer. But considering it’s officially October 1st, there are pumpkins everywhere I look, and the temperature has (thankfully!) dropped a couple degrees, I think it’s finally time to get in the cozy Fall spirit! And what better way to do that than with a big bowl of Sweet Potato Turkey Chili!? This recipe is so hearty, satisfying, and delicious – total comfort food in the healthiest way possible! It’s paleo, gluten-free, dairy-free (unless you add cheese / garnish with Greek yogurt), and going to be one of your favorite Fall recipes!

Ingredients
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1/2 onion, diced (about 1 cup)
1 lb organic ground turkey
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp paprika
1 1/2 tsp chili powder
1 sweet potato, cut into cubes
2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1 14.5-oz can or jar diced tomatoes or fire-roasted tomatoes
Salt & pepper to taste
Garnish: chives, cilantro, 1 avocado
Optional garnish: a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt / coconut yogurt, a sprinkle of shredded cheese
Serves 3.
Instructions
- In a large stockpot, warm 1 tbsp olive oil over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and sauté until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Add garlic and continue to sauté another minute.
- Add ground turkey, breaking it up as it cooks into smaller pieces and season with cumin, paprika, chili powder, and salt and pepper.
- Once turkey is almost cooked through (just barely pink), stir in chopped sweet potatoes.
- Add diced tomatoes (or fire-roasted for more heat!) and chicken broth and stir together.
- 5. Cover and let the chili simmer for about 20-25 minutes (stirring occasionally) or until the sweet potatoes are tender and cooked through.
- Once the potatoes are cooked through, ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with chopped chives, cilantro, and sliced avocado. Optional: add a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt or coconut yogurt on top. Enjoy!

Gotta love a cozy dinner that comes together in just about 30 minutes! And it makes for the perfect leftovers – make a big batch and then pack it for lunch at work the next day. I’m also thinking this would be the ideal thing for me to make in advance and freeze so my freezer stocked with something healthy and filling once the baby arrives!
