Homemade Play Dough (to play, not eat!)

02.06.2024

Why did it take me 4 years of motherhood to finally make my own play dough!?

My mother-in-law has been making homemade play dough since my husband was little, and now she loves doing it with her grandkids. She gave me and Noah a lesson last time we were visiting, and I couldn’t believe how easy it was and just how much better it is than store-bought. Itโ€™s so simple and fun to make, a great activity with the kids, and this recipe makes the softest, best play dough ever. And it makes a ton of it โ€” forget those small little containers, Iโ€™ll never go store-bought again! We went with pink, red, and purple play dough & heart cookie cutters for a very Valentineโ€™s theme. Hope you and your littles enjoy playing with it as much as we do!

HOMEMADE PLAY DOUGH
1 cup flour
1 tbsp oil (we used avocado oil)
1 cup water (room temp)
1/2 cup salt
2 tsp cream of tartar
a few drops of food coloring

  1. In a medium sauce pan, add flour, oil, water, salt, and cream of tartar. Give it all a stir.
  2. Add food coloring. Stir everything until combined.
  3. Place pan over medium heat, then stir constantly until the dough has thickened and starts to form a ball. It will only take a couple minutes!
  4. Remove from heat and place on a cutting board (we used plastic so it wouldnโ€™t stick).
  5. Allow to cool a bit and then start to knead the dough until smooth.
  6. Thatโ€™s it, time to play! Grab your cookie cutters or play dough tools and have fun! Store in an air tight container and it should keep at least a month.

โ€‹Disclaimer: this dough should not be consumed by children or pets.
